How Joachim Emanuel Waser Became a “Pauper”. A Case-Study on a Poor Man’s Moral Career in the City of Zurich (1835–1847)
The microhistorical case study reconstructs how the poor relief [Armen fürsorge] of the city of Zurich supports a poor citizen named Joachim Waser for several years starting in 1835. The poor relief classifies Waser as capable of work and therefore tries to find him a job. However, integration into the labour market fails and Waser experiences a moral career of poverty which is characterized by role adjustments, social degradation and the loss of various rights.
